Charles Sumner was born in Boston Mass, on January 6, 1811 and died in Washington DC on March 11, 1874 Sumner as an attorney and good orator, was the leader of the antislavery forces in Massachusetts and the Senate. He led the Radical Republicans in the Senate during the Civil War and Reconstruction along with Thaddeus Stevens. As a Radical Republican leader in the Senate during Reconstruction, Sumner fought hard to provide equal civil and voting rights for black and blocked ex-Confederates from regaining power. Sumner,along with Thaddeus Stevens defeated Andrew Johnson, and imposed their hard-line views on the South.
