Timothy Pickering was born in Salem, Massachusetts on July 17, 1745 and died at the same location on January 29, 1829 He was the third Secretary of State, from 1795 to 1800 under Presidents George Washington and John Adams administrations. In 1777 he became General George Washington adjutant general of the American army, and was widely praised for his work in supplying the troops during the remainder of the conflict. He served in Washington's Cabinet as Postmaster General from 1791 tp 1795, as Secretary of War during part of 1795 and then as Secretary of State from 1795 to 1800. He resigned over a dispute with Adams and became a leader of the Federalist Party. Serving in both the US Senate and House of Representatives from New England. He was active in the secession movement of New England.
