Colonel Josiah Snelling was the first commander of Fort Snelling, a fort located at the confluence of the Mississippi River and Minnesota River in Minnesota. He was responsible for the initial design and construction of the fort, and he commanded it from 1820 through 1827. Snelling, born in 1782, in Boston to a wealthy banker and served in the Fourth Infantry during the War of 1812. After the war he served in Northern New York along the Canadian border. He was later transferred to St. Louis but was concerned with the situation up stream. His greated know achievement with the building of For Snelling and the settlement of this area of Minnesota. Colonel Snelling's health began to decline in early 1826, he returned to Washington DC and died the following year.
